The present issue contains a selection of edited papers presented at the Conference on Advances in Fluid Mechanics held in Ancona, Italy, organised by the Wessex Institute of the UK.

The issue contains papers on a wide range of topics, including basic formulations and their computer modelling, as well as the relationship between experimental and analytical results. The emphasis is on new applications and research currently in progress.

The papers – like others presented at Wessex Institute conferences – are archived online in the WIT eLibrary (www.witpress.com/elibrary), where they are immediately and permanently available to the international scientific community. In accordance with WIT’s policy, all papers are now available Open Access and can be downloaded for free.

The Meeting provided a forum for the discussion of new work on fluid mechanics and in particular for promoting the interchange of new ideas and the presentation of the latest applications in the field of fluid research.

The Editor is grateful to the authors for their contributions and to the reviewers for their help in ensuring the quality of the contents of this issue.
